Abalone Diving Course
1-day Program
Cost: $195
Prerequisite: None (Certified Freediver or Intermediate divers can opt to attend only the ocean session.)
This program is for divers who want to learn how to catch abalone! Students will learn the proper way to identify legally-sized abalone, pry them off the rock, tag them and even cook them!

What You’ll Learn
In one classroom session and one ocean hunting session you’ll learn:
- Basic surface safety rescue techniques
- How to obtain a fishing license and ab card
- Abalone hunting laws
- How to properly identify legally sized abalone
- How to use an ab iron to pry them off the rock
- How to tag your catch
- How to clean and cook abalone
- How to properly incorporate safety into abalone diving
Can You Do It?
If you are new to abalone diving, are in good general health, and are 12 years of age or older then this course is for you! The gear you’ll need to bring include:
- Wetsuit of appropriate thickness, preferably freediving-style
- Mask, snorkel and long-blade fins
- Weightbelt with adjustable weights
- A simple timing device (stopwatch)
- A float (optional)
